Forget cute and friendly SEO search algorithm codenames such as Panda and Penguin as Google forwent its typical shroud of mystery of version updates with two back-to-back unannounced and nameless upgrades back in May and June. Many SEO experts have dubbed the secret major updates, “Phantom II” has been speculated to be released back in early May which improved on the original “Phantom” which was also a stealth update publicly released that year. Phantom II, similar to the Panda SEO update also centred on being a quality-focused and addresses issues such as lack of original content, low quality affiliate content, overload of ad content, videos that auto play, automatically generated content which has been either curated or scrapped from elsewhere online.
Essentially, Phantom II penalizes individual pages instead of the entire domain name and attempt to steer searchers away poor user experience (UX) that Google determines as frustrating or unhelpful.
Next, we have, “Colossus” which released mid-June and seems to give preference over sites that promote newsworthy and trending topics in search results.
