Local keywords are keyword phrases that consist of the name of a town, city or neighbourhood such as “SEO in Saint John”. Single keywords refer to more popularly utilized words, and are just a single word such as “SEO”.
Because Internet users are more likely to use single keywords over longtail keywords, single keywords bring in a lot more traffic and are known to be quite desirable.
On the other hand, longtail and local keywords are not as popular, but are often utilized by SEO professionals. This is because longtail keywords come with lesser competition.
That was until Google launched ‘Place Search’ — dubbed ‘a new kind of local search result‘ — that organizes your SERP (Search Engine Rank Page) around geographic listings in an effort to assist users in easily finding local hotspots, complete with reviews, and red map pins.
The good thing about this update is that it shows that Google’s algorithm has gotten better at determining relevancy of content and that longtail keywords are more powerful than ever.
The downside is that in a competitive market your organic listing on the lower part of Page 1 could mean your #6 organic listing drops all the way to Page 2 on Google due to larger screen ‘real estate’ that Place Search SERPs enjoy.
It would seem that Google is pushing organic (unpaid, free, earned) rankings even further down the page making room for sponsored results, especially in addition to Google Tag and Google Boost. This means you’ll be required to further your efforts to manage your brand online.
